Tailgate Sports Bar & Grille
Brand Identity & Environmental Design
-
Tailgate Sports Bar & Grille is a Cleveland-based restaurant concept centered around the culture, loyalty, and identity of Cleveland sports.
The founders, experienced restaurateurs behind The Astro and The Haunted House Restaurant — both brand systems I previously developed — commissioned me to create the full visual identity and environmental presence for this new concept.
The engagement included:
• Brand identity system
• Menu design
• Exterior signage
• Interior environmental graphics
• Five large-scale custom wall muralsThe objective was to build a cohesive sports-themed experience without relying on cliché or visual chaos.
-
Sports bars are rarely subtle.
Many lean heavily on oversized logos, loud graphics, inconsistent memorabilia, and visual clutter. The result is often energy without cohesion.
Tailgate had an opportunity to do something more intentional.
The concept needed to feel immersive but structured.
Energetic but elevated.
Rooted in Cleveland pride but not derivative.Without discipline, the space risked becoming visually overwhelming.
-
They didn’t need decoration.
They needed direction. The opportunity was to build a unified visual system that:
• Honored Cleveland sports culture
• Created strong environmental cohesion
• Elevated traditional “tailgating” into a refined dining experience
• Supported repeatability across future locationsThe brand needed to feel celebratory — but considered.
-
CLARITY
We defined Tailgate’s positioning as:
Elevated sports culture.
The identity would lean into Cleveland pride, but with controlled typography, structured layouts, and deliberate hierarchy.
The goal was to create an atmosphere that felt immersive yet professionally designed — not improvised.
• Memorable
• HumanCARE
The work extended beyond logo creation.
The brand identity system established:
• Primary and secondary logo marks
• Typography hierarchy
• Color system aligned with Cleveland sports tones
• Graphic language for large-format applicationsThe menu design reflected elevated tailgating cuisine — clean layouts, strong hierarchy, minimal clutter.
The most distinctive component was the environmental design.
I developed five large-scale murals by blending:
• Digital paintings
• Professional sports logos
• Iconic Cleveland landmarks
• Atmospheric texturesEach mural was composed intentionally — balancing team pride with artistic cohesion.
The murals did not function as wallpaper. They functioned as anchors.
ELEVATION
The result was a sports bar that felt immersive without feeling chaotic.
The identity unified exterior signage, menus, interior graphics, and environmental storytelling into a cohesive system.
Rather than relying solely on memorabilia, the brand created a curated atmosphere — one that felt rooted in Cleveland culture while maintaining professional polish.
The space communicated energy.
But it also communicated intention. -
• Primary logo mark
• Alternate lockups
• Menu spreads
• Exterior signage mockups
• Mural compositions
• Interior photography
• Branded merchandise
• Wayfinding elementsThe system was designed to scale — supporting expansion without losing cohesion.
-
Tailgate launched as more than a themed sports bar.
It became an environment — one where local pride, food culture, and visual identity worked together.
By structuring the brand from the ground up, the space felt deliberate from the exterior signage to the wall art.
This was not a collection of sports references. It was a designed experience.
-
Sports culture is emotional.
But emotion without structure becomes noise. This project balanced both — honoring loyalty while building cohesion.
Built with intention.
